Terms of use

These terms are an agreement between you and Hopscotcher Labs ("we", "us"), the company that makes Stapl. They cover Stapl on iPhone and Android, staplapp.com, and the emails we send about them. Together we call these "Stapl".

By creating an account or using Stapl, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Stapl.

1. Who can use Stapl

You must be at least 15 years old to use Stapl. If you are under the age of adulthood where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms for you.

Stapl is for personal, household use. Please don't use it to run a business, such as a restaurant or a shop, without asking us first.

2. Your account

• You can sign up with an email address and password, or with Sign in with Apple or Google.
• Give us accurate details and keep them up to date.
• Keep your password private. You're responsible for what happens in your account.
• Tell us straight away at support@staplapp.com if you think someone else has used your account.

3. Shared kitchens

A kitchen in Stapl can be shared with other people, such as your family or housemates.

• Everyone in a kitchen can see and change its items, grocery lists and recipes, and can see the kitchen's activity.
• Only invite people you know and trust. When you invite someone by email, you confirm that they'd be happy to receive the invite.
• Invites work once and expire after 7 days.
• A kitchen can have up to 10 members. The person who created it is its owner, and can remove members.
• You can leave a kitchen you joined at any time. If the owner deletes their account, the member who joined first becomes the owner.

4. Your content

Your content is what you put into Stapl: kitchen items, amounts, prices, grocery lists, what you cook and rate, and the photos and text you choose to scan. It stays yours.

You give us permission to store, copy, process and display your content only as far as we need to run Stapl for you and the people in your kitchens, as described in our privacy policy. This permission ends when the content is deleted, except for copies other kitchen members still use and backups that are deleted on their normal schedule.

If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them to improve Stapl without owing you anything.

5. Food, freshness and allergies

Stapl helps you keep track of food. It doesn't replace your own judgement.

• Freshness is an estimate. Stapl's "use today", running-low and freshness signs come from the dates and amounts you enter and from general guidance. Always check the label, the use-by date and the food itself before you eat it.
• Diet filters can miss things, and allergies aren't checked. Recipes, ingredient names and swaps may be incomplete or wrong, and Stapl doesn't check recipes against allergies you add to your profile. If you or someone you cook for has an allergy or a medical diet, check every ingredient yourself.
• Not medical or nutrition advice. Nothing in Stapl is medical, health or nutrition advice.

6. Receipt scanning and price comparison

Some features use artificial intelligence services from other companies to read receipts and order screenshots, and to estimate store prices. Our privacy policy explains what is sent to them.

• Check the items Stapl reads from a photo before you save them. It can misread names, amounts and prices.
• Price comparisons are estimates. Stores change their prices, stock and offers, and we don't control them. The price you pay in a store is the one that counts.
• Only scan photos that you're allowed to share and that don't show other people's private details.

7. Using Stapl fairly

Please don't:

• break the law, or use Stapl to harass, threaten or deceive anyone;
• invite people who haven't agreed to hear from you, or send invites in bulk;
• upload anything harmful, such as malware, or anything you don't have the right to share;
• try to get into other people's accounts or kitchens, or into our systems;
• scrape, copy or resell Stapl or its data, or use bots or scripts with it;
• reverse-engineer the app, except where the law allows it;
• overload or disrupt Stapl or the services it runs on.

8. Our app and brand

We own Stapl, including its software, design, text and recipes we provide, and the Stapl name and logo. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for as long as you follow these terms. Nothing in these terms gives you any other rights in Stapl.

9. Price and changes to Stapl

Stapl is free to use today, with no in-app purchases or subscriptions. If we ever add paid features, we'll tell you first and you'll only pay if you choose to.

We're always working on Stapl, so features may change, and some may be removed. We'll try to give notice of big changes. Stapl may sometimes be unavailable, for example during maintenance or an outage.

10. Ending your use of Stapl

You can stop using Stapl at any time. You can delete your account in the app or by email; see Delete your account.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts other people or Stapl at risk. Where we reasonably can, we'll tell you why first and give you a chance to put things right.

Sections 4, 5, 11, 12 and 13 keep applying after your account ends.

11. What we promise, and what we don't

We work hard to make Stapl useful and reliable, but we provide it "as is" and "as available". As far as the law allows, we don't promise that Stapl will always be available, free of errors, or accurate, including its freshness estimates, recipes, diet filters, scanned items and prices.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have by law as a consumer that can't be waived.

12. Limits on our liability

As far as the law allows:

• we aren't liable for indirect or unforeseeable loss, such as lost profits or lost data, or for food that spoils, goes unused or causes harm when Stapl's estimates or filters were wrong;
• our total liability to you for anything related to Stapl is limited to the amount you paid us in the last 12 months.

We don't limit liability that the law doesn't allow us to limit, such as for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.

13. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Emirate of Dubai and the federal laws of the United Arab Emirates.

If you have a problem with Stapl, please email us first at support@staplapp.com. Most things can be sorted out quickly that way. If we can't agree within 30 days, the courts of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, will decide the dispute, unless the law where you live gives you the right to go to your local courts.

14. Apple App Store and Google Play

If you got Stapl from Apple's App Store:

• these terms are between you and us, not Apple, and we, not Apple, are responsible for Stapl and its content;
• Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Stapl;
• if Stapl fails to meet any warranty that applies, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund the price you paid, if any. Apple has no other warranty obligation for Stapl;
• Apple isn't responsible for any claims about Stapl, such as product liability claims, claims that Stapl breaks a law or regulation, consumer protection claims, or claims that Stapl infringes someone's intellectual property. We are responsible for dealing with those;
• you confirm that you aren't in a country under a US government embargo or on a US government list of restricted parties;
• Apple and its subsidiaries can enforce these terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.

If you got Stapl from Google Play, these terms are between you and us, not Google, and Google has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Stapl.

Your use of each store is also covered by that store's own terms.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Stapl changes or the law changes. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. If you keep using Stapl after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree with them, you can delete your account.
